Big hART’s Smashed Project
Supported by funding from the Australian Government under the National Binge Drinking Strategy
Smashed
The Smashed Project challenged Year 9, 10 & 11 students on the North West Coast of Tasmania to tackle the issue of youth binge drinking through the creative medium of filmmaking. The project was designed to be a culturally desirable and generation‐relevant education strategy to engage young people in the issue and support them to make a positive contribution to the community discussion. The project culminated in the Smashed Film Festival which screened to the local community, providing a platform for the students to showcase their work and express their concerns and attitudes toward binge drinking.
The aims and objectives of Smashed included:
• Influence the attitudes and behaviours of young people
• Promote positive peer messages about responsible alcohol consumption
• Empower young people to lead opinions concerning binge drinking
• Provide a platform for young people to share their experiences, concerns and ideas with the community
Taking into consideration the complex relationship between young people and alcohol, the Smashed team supported students to explore the multi dimensional issue by helping them to produce short films that express their ideas, attitudes and experiences relating to binge drinking. The use of film to explore the complex and intergenerational issue of alcohol abuse will potentially open dialogue and spark debate about the massive issue of binge drinking in our community.
